Then how did I get it?  I pull from "http://abridgegame.org/repos/darcs", which
is described on http://darcs.net as the stable branch.  That repo's motd
announces itself like this:

This is the stable release branch.

When I build the result, it identifies its version as "1.0.8 (stable branch)".
