One shouldn't conflate version numbers used by end-users with version numbers
used by developers.  They are related, but one single scheme can't satisfy
both.  My proposal [1] is rather like the ones mentioned so far in this thread,
but it explicitly indicates which parts of the version number are only for
developers.
