Thanks for the patch.  It's going in.  Sorry for the delay (*).

Note that this does not actually fix issue472 (which is one of those
maddeningly irreproducable things), but it plugs up one possible
place for things to go wrong.

(*) Once I got over my fear of C, it occurred to me that I actually
    understood your patch, pointers, references, strdup and all.
    Whew!  It's been a while...
