There are a few file systems where you can let the file system handle 
some additional transaction responsibility.  It's not a perfect 
solution, but a nice extra cushion for those that end up running on more 
robust file system.  The big one that I know of is that Windows Vista 
added atomic transactions to the NTFS file system:
