at line 2135:

      All other octets are printed in quoted form (as
      <code>^&lt;control letter&gt;</code> or <code>\<hex
      code&gt;</code>).

The < in <hex (rather than &lt;hex) makes the entire remainder of the
document render as a fixed-width font in IE 6.
