Passing via environment variables is highly risky, as there's a limit to
the total size of all environment variables (as I recently discovered after
having added code to darcs to pass information to posthooks via environment
variables.

Yeah, that sounds good.  Of course, we should leave the %<, but document
that it's not needed.
