Jason forwarded me to a recent Haskell Café post re: a possible bug in old
bytestring being "too incautious" about closing file handles.

I would like somebody to do these three things:
 1. read the thread and understand the implications of the bug
 2. add a configure check for it
 3. comb through the bugtracker, identifying bugs that may be caused by it
