After discussion with Nicolas and Florent, we've found a few issues with
the ``darcs transfer-mode'' protocol.  I'm filing separate bugs for each
issue.

2. The protocol is not pipelined

Protocol traces show that the client is sending individual commands, and
waiting for each reply.  It should send a buffer-full (say, 4 kB) of
commands, and then parse all the replies.
