Dear darcs users,
Earlier this month I requested some discussion on this new feature.
My summary of the discussion would be that
1. Some of us would find this feature useful, although those that
are against the feature seem to feel more strongly about it than
those that are for.
2. A local patches mechanism would be a much nicer solution!
If somebody were to implement such a feature, it's use should be
encouraged in favour of this feature.
3. --exclude-files is probably the right user interface for this
feature given its ephemeral nature
4. This feature might be harmful if it confuses the users, but I think
that avoiding the use of an 'ignore' file should prevent some
confusion. Also, implemented correctly, the feature should be
equivalent to systematically hitting 's' on the affected files
during darcs interactive record, so I don't expect there to be any
subtle patch dependency-related pitfalls to worry about
Taking all this into consideration, I shall accept a modified version of
this feature (using the --exclude-files flag initially proposed by
Pietro Abate). So if anybody wants to implement this (Hoan?), I'm
waiting for a patch...
Thanks for all your input!
