Heh. Look what happened when he did write a release announcement!
I think honesty is the best policy here. The bloggers who say "oh,
darcs is dead!" are just self-aggrandizing, IMO. The users and
could-be developers, on the other hand, got a gentle kick in the butt.
Sure, now a more optimistic announcement is justified, but I don't
think it was when David wrote the last one. I bet he'd write a more
optimistic one.
Not that he should be writing more release announcements. If at all
possible somebody with more organization skills than Haskell skills
should be rolling releases and writing announcements.
