Trent,

In your reply, below, you ask if the tree came from another VCS.  The answer
is no.

Take note that your comment "it's unusual to have such a large initial
commit" suggests that maybe I am not using Darcs correctly.  Do others
agree?  If Darcs is not intended to be used for large file bases, then
please let me know.

It's unusual to have such a large initial commit.  Did this tree of code
come from some other version control system (e.g. svn)?  Have you tried
importing each revision as a separate darcs patch using e.g. tailor?
