[darcs-users] new issue manager - Thorkil Naur

Dear darcs users,

I would like to announce a new official position within the darcs team,
that of Issue Manager. The role of the issue manager would be to ensure
that all incoming bugs are triaged and that old bugs are reviewed
regularly, basically assuring that every bug on the tracker is moved
into some sort of resolution state.

Up to now, our relationship with the issue tracker has been somewhat
informal: somebody notices that bugs are growing stale, decides to do
something about it... but then real life imposes constraints and the
person wanders off. We have been lucky so far that somebody has always
noticed the pile-up and decided to intervene for things got too bad, but
I think it would be healthier for the community if we stopped leaving
this to chance.

To tighten this up, we shall now be treating the Issue Manager as an
discrete darcs team job. The issue manager has the responsibility of

* making sure that new bugs are responded to in a timely manner,
and that users get whatever advice they need to get unstuck

* ensuring that issues move steadily to some sort of resolution state

* regularly reviewing issues on the bugtracker, occasionally bringing
issues back to our collective consciousness when the need arises

* finding a successor when the time comes for he or she to move on
  to other things

Every darcs developer is encouraged to help out with the issue tracker,
but we need to have somebody to whom the ultimate responsability falls,
for making sure these things happen. Naturally, this is a kind of job
that likely requires a lot of delegation, delegation which the Issue
Manager is specifically empowered to do.

The first person to fill this post on a official basis will be Thorkil
Naur. Lately on the bug tracker I have taken to marking bugs with a
need-volunteer request (with a specific set of instructions to help
reproduce a bug). On several occasions, Thorkil Naur has acted as this
volunteer, lending us his time, and going to great lengths to make sure
we can reproduce errors and work out their cause. I think Thorkil will
be a good fit for this role, and appreciate his accepting these
responsibilities.

Many thanks and good luck to Thorkil!

Eric

P.S.: In a future message, I will be asking for a communications
manager, or at the very least, an editor for Darcs Weekly News.
Please get in touch with me if you may be interested.
