Thanks, Trent.  I'm mostly replying so that I can CC Neil.

I think we can't do much about his experience of darcs get and darcs
init / darcs pull not being identical experiences though, except make a
special exception on darcs repository format checking for empty
repositories.  But that seems like enough of a corner case to be a
greater liability than it is a feature.
