Yes, that would be fine for my particular need.  An option to get the
minimal context (I understand that means pushing the patch backwards
as far as possible, right?) would be a nice thing, but should not be
the default as that might trigger the exponential behaviour we've been
seeing.

I can see how that could be useful, but I wouldn't use it myself right
now.  (It's a private tree that we're not publishing and not tagging.)
