[darcs-devel] upcoming 1.0.0 (and this time I'm serious!)

Hello everyone,

I'd like to make the next darcs release be 1.0.0. I'd also like to avoid
the mistakes I made with 1.0.0rc3, where it couldn't compile on various
systems (especially windows).

So here's the plan. I'm pretty much happy with where the latest darcs is.
There were significant bugs found since 1.0.0rc3, but it's been a while now
without any new major bug reports, so I'm happy with darcs, but am unsure
how the build system changes might affect various platforms. So I'd like
everyone who can to try compiling the latest darcs. I'd like to have
windows builds essentially ready (just needing a version-number change) by
the time 1.0.0 is released.

If you have any changes that you really want into 1.0.0, go ahead with
them. Anything that I judge is "safe" (and also, of course, and
improvement) will be accepted. Most notable on this list would be the
addition of --public etc flags to initialize and get, which would
initialize the "defaults" to a reasonable configuration.

The plan is that I will not be making any more changes myself if I can
avoid it, since I'm not particularly good at seeing my own bugs, but if I
look carefully at someone else's code I can usually find bugs with a fair
degree of accuracy. If I do make changes, perhaps I'll send them to the
list and wait to actually apply them until I've gotten feedback.

If you have any bugs or missing features (or misfeatures) that you really
think ought to be fixed before 1.0.0, now is the time to say something. By
the way, a RT bug tracking system is now up (thanks to help from Mark), so
you can send bug reports to bugs at darcs.net. It's a good idea to make sure
this is working before the 1.0.0 release. Beware that the server runs
greylisting, which means that your first email to the BTS will be delayed
by an hour, so don't panic and resend. (I almost resent a test bug report
myself, just now.) Perhaps might be wise to wait a day or so before
sending bug reports, since Mark is still working on configuring RT.

My hope is to release 1.0.0 next weekend. If I haven't got enough build
success stories by then (I'm most concerned about freebsd and windows, but
gentoo is another that might be interesting), I'll delay the release.
