[I'm not sure whether that's aimed at me, but I wasn't using that
code.  I wrote different darcs VC support which is covered by a
copyright assignment so it could go in Emacs.]

For what it's worth, I tidied up what I wrote for write-protection.
(It obviously wasn't on when I got the bogus backup file...)  It's
customizable, rather than darcs-specific, and copes with writing files
as well as finding them, e.g. you can't write under .../_darcs/ with
C-x C-w.  See
