[darcs-devel] "pull_firsts_middles called badly" at the end of darcs record

I'm getting a weired error message after an interactive "darcs
record": "pull_firsts_middles called badly" 
I'm using the current version of the stable branch.

Any ideas how I should track down this bug?  

Unfortunately, the repository is somewhat proprietary at this stage,
so I can't share it with the general public.
