Well, it's been two weeks and nobody complained.

We're losing the rigourous error checking that just made it into
1.0.9rc3, but I've had a look at the System.Process code and I get the
impression there is equivalent stuff we can wrap around to get it back
(there's some throwErrNoIfMinus on the returned process id).  Worst
case, we can roll this back.
