It was useful for making sure my binary was using FastPackedString.hs;
I kept a second darcs.net repo without my patches to test against
(since builds take so long, it was much more convenient to just go
'make install').

Certainly; it just got sent.

Anyway, what do you think of reverting your patch and making bytestring the
default? As Don says, this is a change that could use plenty of testing, and the
best people to do it are the ones working out of a darcs Darcs, I'd think.
