I finally had the chance to try this and the progress report functionality
seems great, thank you all!

Yet, I'd like to ask for one more line in the progress reporting,
basically a
 "Trying to access the repository..."
kind of message before the connection to remote repositories is attempted.

Without this, if the network is down and/or there is a failure in the
name resolution service, darcs will just hang leaving the user with no
feedback until

 darcs failed:  Not a repository: http://foo.com (Failed to download URL
http://foo.com :  couldn't resolve host)
