First, please keep this issue a little focussed. Dragging in other 
issues with benchmarking is not helping (i.e. the memory numbers are not 
pertinent to the check/repair times).

Second, please everyone make sure you are NEVER using profiling-enabled 
darcs for benchmarking. On my system, enabling profiling at *compile* 
time causes about 2-fold slowdown.

For ghc_hashed benchmark repo:

darcs-prof check  358,75s user 7,13s system 99% cpu 6:07,86 total
darcs check  175,88s user 5,59s system 98% cpu 3:04,27 total
