For future research,  I've taken the liberty of removing the remote version of
Zooko's repo, and uploading a minimal patch bundle (just the one offending
patch) in its place.

You can still reproduce the error with darcs apply.

Zooko: this kind of minimalisation can be help speed things up a bit, in the
future ;-)

Others: if for any reason, you need the remote repo, check the history of this
ticket.  It's still linked from there.
