I took branch-2.4 and pulled non-conflicting patches from HEAD and at
least I can say the folowing is not the problem:

* Reiner's UTF8 patches
* Florent's pul refactor, obliterate -o, fetch patches
* my patch about apply accepting gzipped files (resolve issue 1477)

Pulling more patches lead to conflicts or inconsitent patches.
