A little further development work that went into prims-v3 before the patchlib
break-off, plus fixes on top to actually make darcs build and pass tests again.

I'll have a look at either transferring patchlib changes back to darcs or maybe
even at adapting darcs to use patchlib instead, although the latter may be too
disruptive for now, especially given the in-flight status of rebase &co.
