Thanks for the report! The MonadFail issue in the title is because we don't 
support base 4.12/ghc 8.6 yet, I'll try to get that fixed soon. The problem 
with darcs.1 I'm less sure about off the top of my head. I've commented on 
the nixpkgs issue, we can discuss it further there to at least isolate the 
trigger.
