Try typing it in a shell script;  in vi (and most unix stuff) you can enter 
an entery with ^V^M, and if you surround that with single quotes, you 
should be fine.

Alternatively; you can replace 'a' with 'b' and then alter the 
_darcs/patches/pending file.
