reiserfs is supposed to have very good performance on small files, and I
have had it in mind for source code for this reason. Perhaps (as others
suggest) reiserfs would give sufficient performance for those who really
need it, without complicating darcs. I may give it a try sometime (not that
I have significant performance needs).
