Have you considered making _darcs/current all unwritable?  The darcs
code that manipulates it could adjust permissions as necessary and then
put them back when done.

I've also had someone at work complain about _darcs/current.  They ran a
recursive tags and kept pulling up files in their editor from the
_darcs/current directory.
