This isn't what I use revision control for.  I use it for (a) sharing 
patches with other people, (b) organizing my own patches to facilitate 
coding.

History is superfluous, except that occasionally it is useful to use 
history in order to understand something about the code (facilitate 
coding).

For my use, a revision control system that destroyed history -- for 
example that combined all patches more than four years old into a 
single "beginning of recorded history" patch -- would be okay.  I would 
very rarely want to look at history from more than four years ago in 
order to understand the current code.
