Two more thoughts on this idea:

1.  The ability to check out a subdir of the tree is a "checklist" item
    for version control systems (eg, see SCM comparison[1]), for
    whatever that's worth.  Allowing this only when the subdir has been
    isolated in advance is partial credit.

2.  David gave the example of isolating wxwindows architecture-specific
    parts.  However, if you made a change to "core" code that required
    updating all architectures (not uncommon), you would have to break
    that change into multiple patches to accomodate the isolation, which
    would be awkward and less useful that a single patch.
