My real-world experiences will have to wait until I converted other 
people to use darcs instead of CVS.  It being a large project, this 
will take time.  Maybe I'll figure out a way to use, privately, CVS and 
darcs in parallel for some time.

The machine was one of the head nodes of our local cluster (called 
Peyote) with 130 nodes.  It is beefy, with 2 Intel Xeon processors (2.8 
GHz) and 4 GB of RAM.  It was almost unused otherwise during that time.  
Of course, the file system was mounted locally.  I aborted another 
attempt that accessed files over NFS quite quickly; this was an order 
of magnitude slower.

I think that much time was spent accessing files (you want the whole CVS 
and darcs directory structures in memory) and having CVS apply patches.
