It might  be unrelated,  but I remember  having problems  with gzipped
patches on a  sparc-solaris2.6. The effect was also  not being able to
open gzipped  patches. The cure  was to include -lposix4  -lpthread in
the LDFLAGS environment variable when building darcs on a sun.
