Yes, using timestamps checks gives a quick dirty check.
but if you are like me I tend to touch a lot of files
I and leave them unchanged.

What I would like to see is 
--use-md5 and I can choose to make it default in my repos
md5 is not as "safe" as sha1, but good enough and fast
