I see.  So the real problem here is that the ``token'' itself does not
carry enough context with it to clarify where exactly to apply it.

E.g., I might want to replace the routine solve by solve_pde, but I do
not want to change the message "Starting to solve the pde..." into
"Starting to solve_pde the pde...".
