I'm in a similar situation, but I wonder why you (and I) can't simply throw out
the history and start fresh.

Do a cvs export or an svn export, do a darcs init ; darcs add -r . ; darcs
record -m'first version in darcs', and begin your new, high-speed darcs 
experience.
