No change in the outcome, I still get failure, however there are now
3 password prompts, instead of the previous 2 prompts - I added the two
patches in this thread to the current 1.0.4 source tree, and compiled
from source.

Same system log entires on the server - no problems with authentication.

There is no delay, the failure is immediate, so I'm not sure if this is
related to a timeout.
