[darcs-users] how to build a darcs executable that reports its version number correctly

Folks:

I continue to have problems with this, even though a couple of people
have kindly attempted to explain it to me.

Why don't the darcs executables that I build report nice version
numbers for themselves?

Here is one that I just built. It has the "2.0.2" tag, and it has
one extra patch beyond that, a patch named "fix makefile to remember
to regenerate version information after running configure.".

So, I would expect it to have a version number like, maybe "2.0.2-1"
or "2.0.2 (+ 1 patch)", or something. But what it actually reports
is "2.0.1rc1 (+ 53 patches)". How can that make sense? It doesn't
even include the word "2.0.1" in its name, when then 2.0.1 tag
appears between the 2.0.1rc1 tag and the 2.0.2 tag in its history.

Thanks.

Regards,

Zooko
