[darcs-users] transitioning to cabal

Hi all,

This patch bundle swaps the Cabal and the franchise builds, making the
Cabal build the preferred one. I'll be pushing it tomorrow.

I have also removed the darcs.cabal.in which is used by franchise to offer
hackage and cabal-install support. I assume that the franchise work would
mostly concentrate on the build-system aspects of things, and not the
packaging ones.

David: Thank-you /very/ much for your franchise work; it was really a
big step forward for us in making sure that darcs builds smoothly on
Windows. I realise you are likely to be unhappy about this move, and
apologise. I also deeply appreciate your concern for keeping darcs
accessible to our users by trying to match autoconf's functionality.
Cabal is a far from perfect solution, but perfect solutions do not yet
exist. I am convinced that this puts us on the right side of the
various build system trade-offs.

The debate is over. Let us satisfice and move on.

Things to note
1. The configure script and makefile will remain the official build method
at least until the 2009-01 release and maybe even until 2009-07.
You are welcome to try the Cabal based build and send bug reports on it.

2. Cabal 1.6 is required for this build. You can download it from
hackage and install it by hand:
   * http://hackage.haskell.org/cgi-bin/hackage-scripts/package/Cabal
or you can just use cabal-install:
     cabal update
     cabal upgrade cabal
   and while you're at it...
     cabal upgrade cabal-install

3. There is one downside from the user perspective. Until Duncan fixes
issue #342 (link below), configuring darcs with Cabal may require
   some manual intervention.

We have sensible defaults which should 'just work', provided you have
libcurl on your system. But if you would like to use a different HTTP
library, you will have to pass in a configuration flag, for example:

     runhaskell Setup configure -f libwww

I believe only the http libraries are really affected by this. The
rest of the defaults are either sensible enough, or behave just like
the old configure script did anyway. Another example of using the
flags, this time to use the HTTP and haskeline packages, but to unset
   the terminfo flag:
     runhaskell Setup configure -f http,haskeline,-terminfo

Right now the available flags and defaults are

      curl True
      curl-pipelining False (needs libcurl 7.19.1)
libwww False (alternatives are curl and http)
http False (alternatives are curl and libwww)

      haskeline False
      curses False (needs libcurses)

external-bytestring True (must be unset for GHC 6.6)
      external-zlib True (uses Haskell zlib)
      terminfo True
      color True

See the darcs.cabal file for more details.

-Description: Darcs is a revision control system, along the lines of CVS or arch.
- That means that it keeps track of various revisions and branches of
- your project, allows for changes to propagate from one branch to another.
- Darcs is intended to be an _advanced_ revision control system.
- Darcs has two particularly distinctive features which differ from other,
- centralized, revision control systems:
- .
- * each copy of the source is a fully functional branch, and
- .
- * underlying darcs is a consistent and powerful theory of patches.
- .

Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081025100527
Importantly, this means that if you just do "make" it will either
build PDF or PS, but not both (with a preference for PDF).
The "installbin" target has been renamed to "install", since 1) that's
the convention, and 2) it was already installing non-binary stuff,
namely the bash completion and manpage.
Leverages concatenative rules (::) to reduce repetition.
[Refactor targets that prevent "include autoconf.mk" (and .depend).
Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081025012208
As well as being clearer, this is now a good deal more liberal. For

Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081024085740
Note that I have also removed the use of @ to hide what make is doing.
It is better to use "make --silent" to hide such noise, because then I
can debug problems in the makefile by running *without* --silent,
rather than having to temporarily remove the @'s.
[Refactor test rules.
Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081024034429
Now the target names correspond to the darcs switches, e.g. "make

 results in a different directory.

Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081023034044
When you do "x = a b" in make, it doesn't get evaluated until you
actually attempt to refer to $x in a rule, because make is an expert
system. The reason := exists is because if you do
     f = $(shell really-slow-command)
and then try to build a bunch of object files, $f will cause
really-slow-command to be run separately for each one. Since we're
just doing internal stuff like $(patsubst), we don't need := and using
it makes it harder to reason about the system, because it's no longer

Trent W. Buck <trentbuck at gmail.com>**20081104125751
This patch makes Emacs use outline (hierarchical) mode, and to

I'd prefer that this file be moved to "NEWS" and formatted as outline-

get_global fetches global preferences from the user's ~/.darcs directory.
This patch uses the more portable getAppUserDataDirectory, so global
prefs will work on windows without requiring a HOME environment
variable, and will be stored in the standard windows app data dir
 (eg C:/Documents And Settings/user/Application Data/darcs).
 Cf http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/1838 .

[Remove bashisms and GNUisms
Matthias Kilian <kili at outback.escape.de>**20081012123017
Replace some bashisms and GNUisms by more standards compliant command
 lines, i.e.:
 - Don't use `\|' in BREs, since it's undefined according to POSIX.
Instead just use grep -E with an ERE.
 - Don't create "funny" strings with the $'\x01...' bashism but use
printf(1) instead. Note that this isn't strictly necessary to fix
printer.sh on non-GNUish systems, but it makes it much simpler to test
   what's going on.
 - In test_line(), just use grep -F, and unescape all second arguments
passed to test_line(). This makes the script much more readable and
actually fixes it for non-GNUish systems.

I'm not entirely clear on what is causing this to fail.
 The basic test is:
   mkdir -p restrictive/liberal
   chmod 111 restrictive
   cd restrictive/liberal
   darcs get
This is apparantly known to fail under Solaris. The original Perl test
claims it's because you can't cd into restrictive/liberal, but the shell
variant seems to manage fine. In any case, I think this touch file
 check is simpler.

There are two issues I noticed when converting this Perl test into
shell. This test was passing, but I made some mistakes translating it,
and in doing so, noticed two potential bugs.
The first is a potentially hidden conflict. If we start from
 a file
   from temp1
And then it seems that a change which adds an empty line should
conflict with a change that adds a line with content.
The second is that if you do omit the newline, as the original
 test does,
   from temp1<EOF>
you get some strange-looking changes, namely that appending a
line to this yields two addline changes and not one.

correct. I fix this by switching to use a variant of the commute

think should restore correctness here. It's a scary bug, though, and
if anyone were to create a moderately small test case, I'd be
 extremely grateful.

This duplicates some code, and makes a Darcs.Patch.FileName into the
module (which FileName originally was) for handling paths within a
darcs repository. Code that had gotten agglomerated into this module
is now in UglyFileName.lhs, which I hope to eliminate. I went through
the imports of FileName and tried to separate them between those that
use FileName to deal with paths in a repository and those that use the
extra functions what were added there, and those that abuse FileName
to handle other sorts of paths (absolute paths, in particular).

This is a partial rollback of the two issue27 patches below. The patches exist
to (a) generate patch log 'junk' and (b) hide such junk from users' view.
Because of a feature freeze, we do not want junk generation to be part of darcs

versions of darcs. To avoid users being confused by this future junk, we only
rollback the junk-generation part, retaining the junk-hiding part.

Our test was wrong, and our repair wasn't smart enough to find this.
Recent fixes in repair by Petr revealed this bug, which allowed darcs
to record a corrupt patch if users manually corrupted the pending
file. I fixed the test (and translated it to bash), and also fixed
the bug by making darcs rename the pending file as soon as it notices
it is broken. This may not be the most robust solution (it might be
better to just exit with failure), but it is much better than
 corrupting the recorded state.

[move withCurrentDirectory, withTempDir and withPermDir

out of RepoPath. This is a pretty invasive change, part of a pathetic
attempt to allow AbsolutePath to permeate the code when we know that
paths are absolute. Eventually this will allow us to statically
ensure that paths *are* absolute. For now, it mostly just makes a few
things more ugly. Eventually we'd like to only use (for instance)
Darcs.RepoPath.getCurrentDirectory, which itself witnesses that the
 resulting path must be absolute.

In general I don't recommend using System.Posix.* on Windows. The
