Just a silly remark on my part, sorry for the noise.

Neil tried a darcs init and then a darcs pull.  The empty repostiory
resulting from his darcs init was --darcs-2 since he was using a darcs 2
client by default, so he quite naturally got an error when he pulled
from his darcs-1 repository.  Neil noticed this and did a darcs init
--hashed which then worked.

I say this was a silly remark on my part, because now I realise the
point about Neil's comment about darcs init/pull and darcs get having
the same result was about the network error... which you probably
rightly point out was just due to transient network failure.  Darcs
get a second time would probably have had the same effect.
