Thanks for the details analysis, Duncan.

It sounds like too much effort and sacrificing too many nice features
(globbing and such) for the ability to build with an unmodified GHC
6.8 -- remember that we can still compile with GHC 6.8 now, as long as
the user upgrades Cabal first.
