I think it may be a good idea to change the README to advise just doing
cabal install so that folks don't run into the problem of missing
dependencies.

Oh, hmm.  What happens if you do cabal update, followed by cabal
install?

I agree!  Thanks for helping us with this.  The problem is that for
people in the Haskell community, this stuff becomes a bit second
nature, so it's easy to forget to document things well enough for
non-Haskellers to get started :-)
