I don't know whether it's useful to anyone, but it's likely that one
can reproduce the original issue mentioned with darcs move by
attempting darcs record at various points in the process. I think that
might modify _darcs/patches/pending, even if you don't end up
recording anything.

(I haven't been keeping up with the thread, but it just came to mind.)
