OK, now that we've established that this is likely not the
case-sensitivity problem I thought it was or the remove file problem
that Zooko thought it was... what else could be wrong?

What I'd like for you to do is to create a version of your repository up
to the patch in question.  I think you can darcs init and pull.  Perhaps
darcs pull --matches 'touch irates/irates.tex' will be enough to limit
the choice of patches to something small...

If you manage to do this, then we may have a better idea why applying
this patch fails.
