-1, emphatically.

I want to avoid "preprocessing" the file in this way, because then
we'd end up with yet another nonstandard extended regex dialect.
Adopting PCRE would be a much better way to get (?i) IMO.

Likewise, now I'm thinking this way: we're making a VCS, not a regexp
optimization library.  Since the PCRE guys *just* make a regex
library, I hope they'll have a faster, more robust optimizer than we
could put together.
