My memory of such things is always terrible.  So I googled it:

Near the end is a little table in the Summary section (reproduced
here, but in terrible quality, I recommend just clicking the link):

Format 	Darcs 1 push/pull 	Darcs 2 push/pull
darcs-1 	Yes 	Yes
hashed 	No 	Yes
darcs-2 	No 	Yes

The second column says what darcs1 can do.  Darcs1 can push/pull with
darcs-1 format repos only.  I could have sworn darcs 1.0.9 understood
hashed, but it appears not.

Trent: I see that the manual does not mention what versions of darcs
support which formats:
