They will be displayed properly if you have set a Unicode encoding in
your locale (as most people have, nowadays). DARCS_DONT_ESCAPE_8BIT is
now the default.

You can use non-Unicode encodings, too, if you like (or are forced due
to legacy issues); for instance ISO latin should continue to work.
