It depends on what you need, what your budget is, and how valuable your
time is.
If you don't need something internet-accessible (as in, you can only
reach the server at home), then running a few services on a desktop PC
requires only time to set up.
If you're moderately committed like me, a cheap virtual private server
is enough to run a surprising amount. SSL certificates are free. But
its a machine to maintain, which is accessible via the internet, so
maintenance/upkeep/security are much more important. I think nothing
of having one extra machine to keep up-to-date, and I'm comfortable
with firewall configuration. But for someone else that might be quite
burdensome and more work and complexity than is desired.
