Thanks for the pointers. It was happening with other GTK3 apps as
well.
It turns out it's an Xorg thing. I wasn't using Wayland - I can't
remember why, I think it was when I had an Nvidia card installed. I've
switched back to Wayland and it seems to be OK now.
