Very unlikely. I regularly shutdown and reboot with no ill effects at
all.

It doesn't. I have the entire traffic of this mailing list (several
thousand messages) on my mail server (Gmail), accessed via IMAP, and
new messages sync almost instantly.

To start with, you need to say what kind of account this is (POP, IMAP,
IMAP, Exchange, ...) and what kind of Internet connection you have. It
might be helpful to run Evolution with debugging enabled, but leave
that to a later stage.
