One of the standard answers on this mailing list is "run evolution from
the command line".  That will show up any system errors.

Beyond that there are debugging environment variables. See

as pointed to by the builtin help pages.

I can't see any specific options for the Maildir local backend, so you
may have to use 'CAMEL_DEBUG=all', but that will produce a lot of
output!
